Noticing Students by Writing Poems

Sheryl A. Lain

Biographical Note

Sheryl Lain has spent 40 years in education, teaching students and teachers. Her teaching began at Wind River High School serving Native Americans on the Wind River Indian Reservation. Thus began the most important part of her career—working with kids. She also served as language arts coordinator and instructional coach for Laramie County School District #1, directed the Wyoming Writing Project, served as liaison for National Council of Teachers of English, and worked as an international presenter for Bureau of Education and Research (BER). Sheryl is the author of A Poem for Every Student, a book about teaching secondary students, published by the University of California press, co-author of Wyoming, the Proud Land, an illustrated history of Wyoming, and numerous articles, chapters, monologues, and poems in national publications. She is a presenter on the state, regional, national, and international levels in the areas of reading, writing, assessment, coaching and standards-based teaching and is an adjunct professor at the University of Wyoming. Sheryl has her BA, MA and literacy endorsement from the University of Wyoming. She is a sought-after school improvement consultant, most recently serving as Instructional Leader at the Wyoming Department of Education.

Jeff Spanke

Biographical Note

Jeff Spanke holds a PhD. In English Education from Purdue University. He is currently an assistant professor of English at Ball State University. Prior to returning to graduate school, he taught high school Language Arts in the rural Midwest. His research interests include adolescent writing instruction, teacher recruitment and retention, and alternative sites of learning.

Sarah Fletcher

Biographical Note

Sarah Fletcher was a schoolteacher for over 20 years before becoming a (senior) lecturer. She worked first at the University of Bath and later on at the Bath Spa University. Photography is a passion of hers, both as a personal pursuit and as an integral part of undertaking research to assist teaching in schools and in universities. Fletcher worked in collaboration with research colleagues in Japan since 1999, and her work was chosen for the Carnegie Foundation KEEP Toolkit Gallery feature. Latterly, she has been the founder and editor for IJMCE the International Journal of Mentoring and Coaching in Education as well as co-author of a SAGE handbook for Mentoring and Coaching in Education. A Ph.D. was awarded in Japan at Waseda University in 2012. Sarah Fletcher is currently an independent educational consultant.

Olena M. Marshall

Biographical Note

Olena M. Marshall, Director of Development Communications in the Office of Advancement, DePaul University, has worked at DePaul since 1998 in writing, editing, fundraising, and external relations positions. She holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Ukraine) and an MA in Sociology from DePaul University. She is now a doctoral student in educational leadership at DePaul University’s College of Education. Prior to joining DePaul, she worked as a consultant in the health care information technology sector and translator/interpreter for the European Commission’s economic development projects in Ukraine. She has contributed to articles on fundraising, art, and higher education. For the past four years, Olena has maintained an active art practice.
